Statement on Sheepdog Trials During Extreme Heat Warnings

The International Sheep Dog Society is aware of concerns raised about the running of sheepdog trials during periods of extreme heat, particularly where Red Weather Warnings are in place.

A Red Weather Warning indicates conditions that may pose a danger to life. In these circumstances, the Society urges all trial organisers, officials, competitors and attendees to exercise extreme vigilance and to place animal welfare, and the safety of all those involved, at the centre of every decision.

When considering whether a trial can safely proceed during periods of exceptional heat, organisers should carefully assess:

• Whether welfare standards for sheep and dogs can be met in the forecast conditions
• Whether transport, handling, waiting times, shade and water provision can be managed safely
• Whether animals, handlers, volunteers, officials and spectators can be protected from unacceptable risk
• Whether postponement or cancellation is necessary where risks cannot be adequately mitigated.

The Society recognises that responsibility for many local and open trials rests with individual organisers. However, as a national body, we strongly encourage all those involved in trialling to take a cautious and welfare-led approach during Red and Amber Weather Warnings.

All decisions should be supported by clear risk assessments and should prioritise the welfare of sheep and dogs above all other considerations. Where there is doubt about whether a trial can proceed safely, postponement or cancellation should be considered.

The International Sheep Dog Society will continue to monitor conditions and encourages members, organisers and competitors to follow official weather guidance and act responsibly in the interests of animal welfare and public safety.
