RULES AND PROTOCOL FOR ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION MATING
AN ADDITION TO THE STUD BOOK RULES
The ISDS encourages any breeder considering artificial insemination for their bitch to consult with a veterinary surgeon experienced in these procedures regarding the best type of artificial insemination for their situation with regard to preparation, testing, and timing required for the insemination. The latest version of the ISDS Notification of Mating Card has a box to tick to indicate whether the mating is by artificial insemination or natural. If artificial insemination is elected, an AI Notification of Mating must also be fully completed and be signed by the veterinary surgeon who conducted a transcervical or intravaginal insemination or who appointed the approved Registered Veterinary Nurse to demonstrate compliance on law with AI. These forms are to be sent along with the Notification of Mating Card and CEA/DNA form to the ISDS office.
Attention is drawn to owner of semen section on the AI notification form, if the owner of the semen is not the registered owner of the donor dog, then an official Semen Transfer of Ownership form must also be provided.
It is recommended that on the sale of semen, the Semen Transfer of Ownership form is completed.
Registration cards will state if a natural mating or an AI mating.

Artificial insemination (AI) is a procedure to produce pregnancy in a dog without a natural mating. It involves collecting semen from the male dog (stud dog) and then injecting it into a bitch (female dog). Semen may be: • Fresh semen collected from a male dog collected at the site of artificial insemination. • Chilled semen collected at a site distant from the site of artificial insemination and transported chilled to the site of insemination. • Frozen semen collected from a male dog and stored frozen. Frozen semen is held at the site of insemination, thawed, and used for insemination. There are different types of Artificial Insemination allowed in the United Kingdom (UK • Intravaginal insemination. The semen is placed into the vagina. Before June 2023, lay people could carry out this procedure but now it must be carried out by a veterinary surgeon or by a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) under the direction of a veterinary surgeon. • Transcervical insemination. The semen is placed into the uterus through a catheter or endoscope. This type of procedure can only be performed by a veterinarian. • Transuterine insemination. This procedure makes a surgical incision into the uterus and injects the sperm through the incision. This is an illegal procedure in the UK. |
