Eye Test Rules

Understanding the rules for eye testing can be difficult.  When there were just ophthalmic rules it was more straightforward.  The eye test rules are listed in the The Full Guide to Member Services and Stud Book Rules that is available from the Registration Rules page.

December 2012 - The BVA have put together a helpful sheet containing answers to common questions regarding DNA Testing for Border Collies.

Recently the eye examination (ophthalmic) rules were simplified with the remove of a '2 year' requirement in 2009.  News from the 2010 Society Meeting, and a summary of the eye examination rules, can be seen here.

There is also earlier 2009 guidance on the frequency of eye testing to owners and breeders given in an item on dog welfare.

The addition of genetic test results (DNA CEA) is of great benefit to breeders and the dog, but it can be complicated. The Registration Rules give the final judgement, but these documents have been written in the past to introduce the concepts to members:

  • An information sheet was issued in 2006 to explain the impact of DNA testing and this will tell you how the defective genes are passed on.
  • A discussion document starts from the beginning and puts things in the context of questions that the owner of a bitch might pose.
  • The rules are summarized in a simple guide that might be easier reading than the more formal Rules.
