Irish National Trials 2007

Toorlestrane, Aclare, Sligo - 26-28 July

News Summary

The trial had an exciting finish as two dogs stood at 188 points at the end - Wilton Goligher's Glen and James McGee's Becca.  The Judges ordered a rerun for each to decide and James was drawn first.  He came in with 188 points, again, and Wilton with Glen managed 154 points.  But the assembled crowd did not hear of the result until it was read out at the prizegiving. 

A delighted James posed with his three children Rachael, Laura and James (junior) for the photographs while his wife Karen proudly watched.

 

 

James also has his other dog, Roy, selected as the Irish Driving Dog for the International Trial.  Wilton, in second place, is pictured here with Robin Page, presenter for Horse and Country TV.  This trial, as all ISDS trials for 2007, will be featured in October on Sky television.

The Brace competition was a draw: Dennis Birchall with Mossie and Meg were on 210 points as were Con McGarry with Dan and Nell.  An agreement with Judges and Handlers saw them declared Joint Champions.

YOUNG HANDLERS

It was wonderful to see a good number of young handlers at these trials.  The youngest (pictured here) was 14 year old Gerrard Egan who handled his father's dog Ben.  Gerrard received the Sean O'Leary Trophy. Later this year Gerrard will be running for Ireland on the BBC's One Man and His Dog.  Dean McAuley aged 16 was competing as was 17 year old Liam Gallagher.  Liam received the David Forsythe Trophy for his courage on the field and will also represent Ireland  as the nation's Young Handler at the International Trials.
