English National Trials 2007

Carlton-in-Cleveland, N. Yorks, 17 August

Posted 7:59 .p.m. at end of running

The day started with a series of high scoring runs, and it has continued the sme way.  Dick Roper and TOM set a high target of 204 points at run number 58, just after lunch, but Gordon Watt and YORK pushed the hurdle higher with 205 points at run number 79.

Gordon is a past Supreme Champion, is the current World Champion with YORK in 2005 and was also English Champion in the same year.  As a full-time shepherd his dog handling skills are naturally some of the best.  An experienced viewer, who has seen many trials in many countries, said "that was one of the best runs I have seen for several years, the dog and handler worked as one, and so smoothly".  Gordon is pictured here with Dick Roper after his run - Dick was gracious in his congratulations.

The scoring format, taking the top five runs from each day, was an emergency measure but has received a lot of positive comment.  Paul Turnball, top on Day 1, now has the exciting prospact of another chance to try for top place, evn though many points today are higher than his.  It has all produced an wonderful and interesting National Trial.

The five highest placed for Day 2, and Reserve contender are:

79  W G Watt YORK 205
58  R D Roper TOM 204
96  A Iley CHESTER 203
89  K Addington GLEN 203
56  G T Watson ERYRI ROCK 195
102  R C McPherson MBE ROY 193

MacPherson just squeezes ahead of Scrimgeour and Kyme, also on 193, by one Drive point.

The second day of the Brace Competition produced the following result:

4  A Hendy F LLANGWM LADDIE 251077 RETD
        & BOSS 259822
5  J Cropper F FLEET 280463   196.5
        & BEN 280462
6  S Duckworth F KELLY 268136   229
    & HIGHCLIFFE TOM 266301

The field has proved an ideal setting, with an interesting outrun, and excellent visibility of fetch and drive gates.  This picture shows the setting during Chloe Cropper's run with her ROY.
