2008 World Trial - Story, day 2
Trialing was delayed for more than an hour on Friday morning due to fog that concealed the top of the trial fields. But when the fog finally lifted, the trial fields were bathed in bright sunlight with calm winds and mild temperatures. On Field 1, Karin Mattsson and Lyn, from Norway, immediately scored 198 points. Later, Englishman Tony Iley and Chester scored 193, and Irishman Aiden Gallagher with Bill scored 195, setting a high qualifying standard for the field. Through eight runs on Field 2, Swedish captain Carl-Magnus Magnusson and Roy had the highest pointed run of the day with 191. On Field 3, a high standard was set early with three runs over 190 points. Ron Snoeck and Mitch, from the Netherlands, opened the competition with 198 points. Three runs later, Welshman Nigel Watkins and Floss scored 196 points. Ged Watson and Roy (ENG) followed Nigel and scored 195. Watson, with Eryri Rock, was the highest pointed competitor on Field 1 on Thursday, when he posted a score of 204 during the last run of the day. Through 15 competitors, Vaughan Hughes and Black (WAL) had the highest score of the day on Field 3 (202).
In the early afternoon, rain moved into the area, but trialing continued. A score of 190 was posted on Field 1 by Jo Agnar Hansen and Tika, from the Netherlands, but that score was bested soon after by Welshman Ricard Millichap and Taddymoor Jen (203). On Field 2, Meirion Jones (WAL), with Joe, posted a score of 208, the highest to that point in the qualifying trials. Alasdair MacRae (USA) with Star (196) and Alan Jones of Wales, with Bet (198), also posted high scores on Field 2. On Field 3, a Welshman and an Irishman put themselves into contention for the semi-finals. Hefin Jones (WAL) and Sam scored 198 at midday, while Barra O’Brien (IRE) and Mist posted a score of 200 three runs later.

Shortly afterward, Allister Lyttle from Ireland, with Spot, scored 200. Consecutive runs on Field 3 were in the high 190’s, as Aled Owen (WAL) and 2007 Supreme Champion Roy scored 197, and Scotsman John MacLeod with Ben posted 195.
As the number of competitors dwindled to a few, three scores over 190 were posted on Field 1. First, Tom Lawrenson (ENG) with Spot scored 192. Immediately after this, both Jim Cropper and Fleet, from England, and Nigel Watkins and Lad, from Wales, each posted a score of 196 on consecutive runs. On Field 3, Danish captain Tony Ottesen and Bob scored 200. In a rerun, Nigel Watkins and Floss posted a score of 202 to finish second in the top seven. The minimum qualifying score on Field 3 was 197. Aled Owen (WAL) and Roy edged Peter Hetherington (SCO) and Lynmar Hemp for the last spot on drive points.
The final field to report was Field 2, where trialing continued until nearly 8:00 PM. In the late running, Bernard Arends and Spot, from Australia, scored 204, while Finn Petersen (DEN) and Roy posted 198. The final run of the day, by Eric Groot (NED) and Eryri Nan was the day’s best, with a score of 220.
