The handler in sixteenth place is the team reserve. The two highest placed Brace competitors and a Young Handler complete the team. Where two or more handlers are equal on points, their exact final placings are decided by the Outrun, Lift and Fetch points. Saturday 4.45pm: Three runs to go, and Andy Carnegie with Lark have come close with a great run to end on 194. All competitors on 184 or above know they are in the team. Saturday 4pm: Just 6 runs to go, and Bobby Dalziel with Joe is still at the top of the board. It has been a close contest, with only three points separating the top four runners at this stage. The cutoff point for the team is currently 181, with two handlers on 180. Saturday 2.30pm: Ewen Mackinnon is the 2009 Scottish National Brace Champion. Competing with Nan and Glen on the final day, Ewen posted a score of 235. The other competitor who goes forward to the International Brace competition is Peter Martin. John Casey and Ben at the pen. Pic: Sine Robertson Saturday 10.30am: A new leader - in the middle of the final morning, Bobby Dalziel and Joe scored 197 to take the lead from Michael Shearer. John Casey with Ben and Andrew Dickman with Rule Skye II have also posted high scores. Saturday 8am: The final fifty Singles and two Doubles runs take place today. Friday 6pm: Today's trialling has come to an end with Michael Shearer and Cap still heading what is already a very strong team. Stuart McCrindle with Bill Pic: Sine Robertson The highlight of Friday afternoon was Stuart McCrindle with Bill (AD Scrimgeour's Ben, S McCrindle's Kas) who earned 188 points. Friday 2.30pm: Today's Brace runs were both completed - K C MacKinnon with the latest in the Corrie line and Bob scored 149, but Peter Martin with Maid and Tess have taken a commanding lead on 201. Two more Brace runs are scheduled for tomorrow. Michael Shearer and Cap went into the lead on Friday morning, despite the efforts of one of the ewes. Pic: Sine Robertson Friday 12 noon: A new leader - by just one point. Running at No 65, Michael Shearer and Cap are the new leaders on 195. Some good work has gone wrong today with a missed gate or in a struggle with the odd determined ewe or ewes at the pen or in the shedding ring, but Michael and Cap worked steadily and have taken a deserved top place. Michael earned some sympathy yesterday for the boldness of one ewe. Today's picture at the pen shows that today's packet was not beyond such tricks Friday 10.50am: A spate of high scoring runs mid morning (runs 54-57) saw numbers in the 180s posted. Friday 9.30am: Another lovely day, which looks as though it is going to be hotter than yesterday. A track is emerging on the first leg of the drive, made by yesterday's packets of sheep, which acts as a guide to today's handlers in taking the correct line. Peter Hetherington has just posted 184 with Lynmar Hemp, the first score in contention of the day.
Bill Elliot and Rod at the pen. Pic: Sine Robertson Thursday 6.45pm: The final outcome of the first day's trialling, with Bill Elliot's Rod in first place, was a fitting end to a series of more than unfortunate events. Bill lost his number one dog, 10 year old Wes, listed to run on Friday, due to a debilitating breakdown of his spinal tissue. Rod then joined the sick list with a gastric upset, and in the morning seemed unfit to run. Fortunately, he was fighting fit by late afternoon. Rod ran out well and got off to a positive start, taking charge of the sheep on the fetch. He drove well, keeping good control, and the partnership pof man and dog worked well together at hand. Thursday 5.15pm: A new leader - running at No 36, Bill Elliot and Rod had an excellent run to score 194.
Davie Wallace with Rob Pic: Sine Robertson Thursday 2.15pm: Today's running started with what might have looked like a bad omen, but for once, good came from bad. First run of the day, Davie Wallace from Peeblesshire with Rob (R B henderson's Bill x D Wallace's Meg), was halted on the fetch after a ewe bolting at the top of the field was deemed to have spoiled Davie's chance of a fair run. Rob started again and put in an impressive display, earning 181 points, which set a high standard for an opening run and went unbeaten until run 13. Rob was tight at the top and pushed the ewes across. On the drive, the dog never got the sheep flowing, but he kept them on line and got all his obstacles. Rob's father, Bill, was a former winner of the Soldier's Hollow trial in the USA. Run 13 was certainly not unlucky for Ewen Mackinnon and his Nan (E C Mackinnon's Moss x M MacKay's Mist) who racked up 188. Ewen had a good run with Nan. Runner up at the 2007 Scottish National at Fearn, and daughter of Moss, runner up at the 2002 Scottish National at Jedbergh, Nan was low on the cross drive and didn't take her command until Ewen shouted at her, but she got her gate and balanced out the drive work with good work at hand. Thursday 2.15pm: The Scottish National opened on a warm sunny day with well behaved Blackface ewes running on a rolling green field with enough undulations to keep spectators watching and to ensure that good dogs remained focused on their work, not leaving anything to chance. As the day wore on, some sheep proved less keen to go into the pen, while some packets wanted to stick together in the ring, others wanting to split into patterns that did not accord with National rules. Thursday 2pm: Today's only Brace competitor, Angie (Angus) MacDiarmid, was running eight year old Hemp and one year old Lad. Although Hemp had a good start, Lad found the outrun very difficult, so they retired at the end of the fetch. There are two more Brace runs tomorrow, Friday, and two on Saturday, during the lunch break. The latest results are on the most recent results page.
