2010 English National Champions Matt Watson and Milo
England's Driving Champion, John Carter with Moons Park Jen Saturday 8.20: Congratulations to Matt Watson, who is English National Champion, with Stephen Duckworth second and David Harrison third. Saturday 8.00: Stephen Duckworth went first, but granted rerun; David Harrison started off well, but was timed out at the single. Stephen Duckworth just managed to complete. Matt Watson has completed his run. Now we wait for the scores. Saturday 7.30: Matt Watson is today's winner - now for the runoffs which are on the full course, and the light is beginning to fade. Saturday 6.40: Just three runs left before the runoff, and a new third place - Arthur Temple with Meg. The sun is in the handler's face, but the wind has dropped a little. Saturday 5.50: Tom Lawrenson's rerun was tidy apart from a moment at the top of the fetch, and has given him 172, above Jim Cropper on the drive score. Mavis Backhouse was timed up at the single on what looked like a good run at her first National. Saturday 5.20: Just a handful of runs left - Richard Briggs has joined Raymond MacPherson on 164, but Richard's olf score is just higher. Saturday 4.30: Thirteen to go before the runoff. Scores up to No 134 are up - no changes in the leaders. Saturday 2.40: Eamonn Lawless and Bill are in fourth place on 170. The sheep seem to be hungry this afternoon and are stopping to graze on the course. The cross drive gates continue to be a problem. The weather continues to be variable. Saturday 1.20: There were two brace runs today, using Monday's Cheviot Mules. Richard Briggs with Wenndale Star and Bill finished on 159; Richard Hutchinson, running Wenndale Roy and Sweep, was the clear winner on 186, and becomes English National Brace Champion for 2010 - congratulations! The singles have now restarted in bright sun. Eamonn Lawless and Bill have just completed, but had problems at the cross drive gates and at the pen. There is an area just before the gates where, perhaps because of today's wind direction and speed, the dogs can't hear commands very well. Saturday 12.00: Allan von Dinther and Monty have moved into second place. Saturday 11.00: Kim Gibson has just run with Buffy. Hard work at the shed and timed up at the pen. Left and right hand outruns are about 50/50 at the moment. The sun is attempting to break through the cloud. Raymond MacPherson and Don have gone into third position. Saturday 9.40: Two good scores - Matt Watson's higher than any posted so far at thie National - could indicate that the bar will be set very high today. Saturday 8.40: Matt Watson and Milo had a run to challenge Jim Cropper's, hitting all gates and finishing well. It is a much colder day, with the strong South Westerly wind blowing into peoples' faces, and warmer coats are much in evidence. Every effort is being made to ensure that the trials finish promptly, with the sheep for the next run being brought out and held as the previous run finishes. Saturday 7.00: The final day started early, using yesterday's North Country Cheviots. News, scores, and details of how the team places are developing throughout the day. Jim Cropper started the day with a good run, except for sliding the sheep top side of the cross drive gates and a bit of bother round the pen. Dave Thompson followed, but was timed up at the pen. Everyone has taken a left hand outrun so far today. David Harrison's Ben, winner of Friday's trial. Eamonn Lawless with Maddie. Carol Mellin, third on Friday, with Maisie. Only Chris Todd... Richard Hutchinson's Wenndale Roy, 5th on Friday. Friday 8.45: Day two is completed - Mark Elliott and Gail also have 174, but I understand that David Harrsion has a better olf score and will therefore compete in tomorrow's runoff. Friday 7.45: Three to go - Carol Mellin and Maisie have joined the leader board. Friday 5.00: Weather now overcast, cooler and rain on its way. Richard Hutchinson and Wenndale Roy, also Joe Relph and Mac have both joined Ben Smith on 164. Friday 3.55: Another new leader - David Harrison and Ben have taken over at the top. Their run was very quiet with very tidy turns at the gates accurate lines and a steady pace. Scores are gradually rising as the afternoon goes on. Friday 2.40: A new leader - John Carter on 168 with Moons Park Jen. The sheep have settled a lot more this afternoon. George Bonsall had a difficult outrun, but the rest of his run was good. Large clouds are casting shadows over the field as they race across the field. The winds is strong - Katy Cropper has just gone to the post without her hat! Friday 1.10: The sun has come out for the brace runs, but dark clouds loom. Two completed brace runs much appreciated by the spectators - Stephen Duckworth, followng his success in yesterday's singles, is currently just ahead of Thomas Longton. The singles have resum ed; John Carter has just completed his run to much applause. Friday 12.30: At the half way stage of the day, Timothy Longton and Kim have moved into second position. Friday 11.30: A new leader - Ben Smith, 3rd yesterday with Meg, has equalled yesterday's top score of 164 with Guto. Rain is falling in short bursts. Norman Ireland is having a rerun after sheep strayed onto the course. Friday 10.00: Chloe Cropper has matched her score of yesterday, this time with Roy, to take her to the top of the board for today. Paul Turnbull is currently second with Dot on 147. The next hour or so will tell whether today's scores will be similar to those of yesterday. Friday 9.30: The last three runs didn't affect any of yesterday's leader board, so the top six are as shown above. Today the sheep are North Country Cheviots, not as challenging as yesterday's sheep, but still casing problems. The first two runs were timed out - Keith Preston took a very long time at the shed, the sheep being difficult to split, but the pen was over in a blink, and the bell rang just as he was taking the single. Friday 8.00: A ten minute break between trials - the sheep ran straighter on the fetch than yesterday. We should know very soon if today's three runs have affectedthe final positions. Friday 7.00: The last three runs for the Thursday trial start at 7am, using ths same Cheviot Mule sheep as yesterday. The sheep will then be changed - Cheviots for today - and Friday's trial will start at 8am. Leader at the close of play on Thursday evening, Stephen Duckworth with Spy, pens as the sun sets behind the trees.
Chloe Cropper and Ned, currently fourth, had a cracking run which would have been in first position had they not run out of time at the single. Currently in sixth place, Joe Relph's Eevee, one of three handlers on 156 on Thursday. Thursday 8.55: The last three runs for today will take place tomorrow starting at 7am. Thursday 8.45: Light just holding out - Emma Grey (run 47) is the last run for tonight. Thursday 8.15: Trialling is continuing tonight for as long as the light lasts - No 45 currently running. Any of tonight's runs still outstanding will be completed tomorrow morning before tomorrow's 8am start at the rate of 15 minutes per run plus 15 minutes to change the sheep (today's Cheviot Mules will be retained for the delayed runs; tomorrow's runs are on Cheviots). Thursday 6.30: Chloe Cropper has had a cracking run, but timed outoin the single, but could still be in the running. The sheep seem a bit more settled, the air is auite still, and the birds are swooping low. Thursday 5.45: Joe Relph and Eevee have had the first completed run for some time. The sheep were quieter round the course with careful handling, but still tricky at the pen, however they got them in. Thursday 5.20: It has clouded over - rain is forecast for tomorrow morning - and good scores continue to be hard to come by. It looks as tbhough it will be another long day. Thursday 4.00: The sheep have been quieter, but now harder work in the ring and at the pen. The cross drive is also proving hard to judge, and it is difficult to get a tight turn at the end of the drive away. Mark Elliott and Spot are the new leaders. Thursday 3.00: Scores continue to be on the low side, with the sheep, Cheviot Mules, still tricky. The favoured outrun is to the left - the wooded area on that side is not so far causing any problems, but there is a danger of dogs losing their way in the vast expanse to the right. The sun is still shining, although there have been a few brief showers. Mark Elliott and Spot have put in a good run, but the score is not yet available. Thursday 1.00: The two brace runs for today have been completed: James Gilman with Dot & Peggy are in the lead on 164 with Robin Dean with Moss and Jip running out of time on 127. Thursday 10.30: The trial has started on a gloriously sunny day following a brief shower. As the early scores indicate, the sheep are proving to be testing, hanging to the right and not wanting to go round the post. Brace scores James Gilman at the second pen.
