Advent Calendar - Shepherding Highlights

No 25 - Puppies

Christmas is all about a very special birth, so what better subject to complete this series than those events so special to us all, the arrival of puppies?!

However often we may see it, there is something magical in new life. Sharing and guiding their experience as puppies grow, play and start to develop into early maturity is a special blessing, and we should never lose the awe and wonder of that all too short a time.

Finally, as a thank you to all of you who have opened these 25 Advent Calendar "doors" day by day, we would like to share with you our favourite carol. not a traditional one, it was only written in 1927, but one which conveys the magic and the reality of the Christmas birth in both the words and the music. Note the second lines of the first verse - "Myrrh for its sweetness, and gold for a crown" and the third "Myrrh for embalming, and wood for a crown" contrasting the Christmas story with Good Friday to come. (This is the second verse in some performances).

There are two versions on YouTube - here is King's College Cambridge singing the choral version.

And here is Sting performing the solo version.

For the words and the story behind, this is the Wikipedia entry.

A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!
